WSU/WSUF Private Grant Sponsors

Washington State University and the WSU Foundation (WSUF) are separate legal entities with different Employee Identification Numbers (EINs) and IRS classifications. It is important to know which entity to use on your proposal and to make sure all supporting documents are consistent with the applicant entity used.

To find out which entity to use, read the funder’s request for proposals (RFP) and look at the funder’s qualification rules. If the proper submitting entity remains unclear, please contact the WSU Office of Foundation Relations by email at wsuf.ofr@wsu.edu or visit our website.

In general, please use WSU as the applicant. If the funder requires a 501(c)(3) for submission, use the WSU Foundation, which is a nonprofit, public 501(c)(3) organization, as described in IRS sections 509(a)(1) and 170(b)(1)(A)(vi).

If the grant proposal names the WSU Foundation as the submitting organization, the PI must work with the WSU Office of Foundation Relations or—for corporate foundations—with the WSU Office of Corporate Engagement and the PI’s grant administrator to submit the proposal through ORSO for WSU approval, with WSUFnoted as the sponsor on the eREX form.

Staff from the Office of Foundation Relations and Corporate Engagement  are available to help on any proposal or gift request to privately-funded organizations. If notified early, these offices can provide valuable assistance such as funder background research, relationship building, and proposal creation and submission.  These offices seek to share relationships and lessons learned across the colleges and campuses to increase WSU’s success in obtaining private funding.

For more information, contact wsuf.ofr@wsu.edu for private foundations and lauren.graziano@wsu.edu for corporations.
